Werner Herzog (München, 1942) werd wereldberoemd met films als Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Encounters at the End of the World en Grizzly Man. Zijn films gaan vaak over outcasts in een extreme relatie tot de natuur. De laatste jaren manifesteert hij zich steeds meer als schrijver.
In 2022 verscheen zijn boek Het schemeren van de wereld, over een Japanse soldaat op een klein eiland in de Stille Oceaan, die nog dertig jaar na het einde van WO2 dacht dat het oorlog was. In zijn memoires, getiteld Ieder voor zich en god tegen allen, beschrijft Werner Herzog een leven vol avonturen en grenservaringen, alsof zijn leven Herzogs beste film is.
In zijn nieuwe boek De toekomst van de waarheid (Nederlandse vertaling verschijnt oktober 2024) toont Herzog zich wederom een begenadigd schrijver. In een wereld die wordt ondermijnd door nepnieuws, politieke manipulatie en kunstmatige intelligentie, stelt hij de filosofische vraag: wat is waar? En hoe verhoudt de waarheid van poëzie en filmkunst zich tot empirische feiten? Op geheel eigen wijze knoopt Werner Herzog fascinerende gedachten en herinneringen aan elkaar.

Werner Herzog (Munich, 1942) became world famous with films such as Fitzcarraldo, Nosferatu, Encounters at the End of the World and Grizzly Man. His films are often about outcasts who are in an extreme relationship with nature. In recent years he has increasingly established himself as an acclaimed writer.
His book The Twilight of the World was published in 2022, and tells the tale of a Japanese soldier on a small island in the Pacific Ocean, who, thirty years after the end of WWII, still thinks the war is ongoing. In his memoirs, entitled Everyone for Himself and God Against All, Werner Herzog describes a life full of adventures and borderline experiences, as if his life were his best film.
In his new book The Future of Truth, Herzog once again proves himself to be a gifted writer. In a world undermined by fake news, political manipulation and artificial intelligence, he asks the philosophical question: what is true? And how does the truth of poetry and cinema relate to empirical facts? Werner Herzog weaves fascinating thoughts and memories together in his own unique way.
