The Paper Ensemble is het geesteskind van kunstenaar en componist Jochem van Tol. Al sinds 2007 doet Van Tol onderzoek naar de klankmogelijkheden van papier – resulterend in verbijsterende papieren instrumentsculpturen gemaakt van uiteenlopende, vaak bijzondere papiersoorten. #17, het zeventiende werk van de groep, is geïnspireerd op het idee van een Japanse tuin.

Het publiek zit verspreid door de ruimte, in een ‘tuin’ van papieren sculpturen in allerlei tinten wit, blauw, grijs en zwart. Door zes performers wordt er gebouwd, gewerkt, gespeeld. Je hoort ritselend bos, de ruisende zee, zingende walvissen. Soms intiem en dichtbij, dan weer onheilspellend groots. En de tijd lijkt stil te staan.
 
#17 is een doorontwikkeling van #16, de korte muziekfilm die Van Tol en regisseur Jiska Rickels in 2022 maakten. Daarvoor ontwikkelde Van Tol samen met multimediaal kunstenaar Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti de bijzondere papieren instrumentsculpturen die nu opnieuw een hoofdrol spelen. Nieuw is dat het ensemble ook ander slagwerk en versterking toepast: twee slagwerkers spelen op hout, metaal en steen, en papiergeluiden worden gesampled en getransformeerd met een modulaire synthesizer.

‘Lopen, kijken, luisteren’ is het devies.

The Paper Ensemble is the brainchild of artist and composer Jochem van Tol. Ever since 2007, Van Tol has been exploring the sonic potential of paper – resulting in astonishing sculptural paper instruments, made from a variety of different types of paper. #17, the group’s seventeenth work, is inspired by the idea of a Japanese garden.

After experiencing The Paper Ensemble, you will never look at paper the same way again.


The audience is seated throughout the space, in a ‘garden’ of paper sculptures in various shades of white, blue, grey and black. Six performers build, work and play, creating sounds reminiscent of the rustle of leaves, the wash of waves and even whale song. Ranging from close and intimate to ominously grand, the music seems to bring time to a standstill.

#17 is a further development on #16, the short music film Van Tol and director Jiska Rickels made in 2022. Before that, Van Tol and multimedia artist Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti developed their unique paper instrument sculptures that now once again play a starring role. What is new is that the ensemble also uses different types of percussion and amplification: two percussionists play on wood, metal and stone, and paper sounds are sampled and transformed with a modular synthesiser.
