Worden we wie we zijn in de blik van de ander? Die filosofische vraag is de motor achter het project Prima Materia van Myrtó Nizami, die met deze eindpresentatie haar tweejarige traject als composer-in-residence van Festival Dag in de Branding afsluit. In nauwe samenwerking met sopraan en performer Kristia Michael, Ensemble Modelo62, audio engineer Siavash Jafari en videokunstenaar Luca Tornato Serafini onderneemt Nizami een ingenieuze reis naar het onderbewuste, met de Portugese dichter Fernando Pessoa als gids. Achter ieder masker schuilt een nieuw masker, zegt Pessoa in zijn Sonnet VIII. Wie ben ik echt, als mijn identiteit een matroesjkapop is?

Performer Kristia Michael vertolkt twee rollen: ze is zowel wetenschapper (of verteller) als onderzoeksobject (de dromer). Gezeten op een bed met een klamboe die ook een projectiescherm is, daalt ze af in haar diepste dromen, terwijl ze tegelijkertijd zichzelf bekijkt.

Vragen over identiteit zijn van alle tijden, maar hebben een nieuwe betekenis gekregen in onze huidige wereld, waarin alomtegenwoordige technologie en media de perceptie van onszelf en de werkelijkheid compliceren. We zijn voortdurend bekeken, presenteren voortdurend andere façades, we zijn een fragmentatiebom van ‘zelven’ en tóch ervaren we onze identiteit als ‘heel’. The Last Mask ensceneert die gespletenheid in een setting die zowel een laboratorium als een dromenreeks is.

Voorprogramma

Als voorprogramma zal ensemble-in-residence SKETCH351 zich voor het eerst presenteren. SKETCH351 is een muzikanten ensemble dat zich toelegt op hedendaagse muziek en creatie. Als maker-in-residence voor Dag in de Branding presenteert de groep een klein voorbeeld van hun Fluxus-inspired playground – een performatief origineel werk dat hun reflecties op de absurditeit van het dagelijks leven omvat.

Do we become who we are in the gaze of the other? This philosophical question is the driving force behind Myrtó Nizami’s Prima Materia project. She concludes her two-year stint as composer-in-residence of Festival Dag in de Branding with this final presentation. Working closely with soprano and performer Kristia Michael, Ensemble Modelo62, audio engineer Siavash Jafari and video artist Luca Tornato Serafini, Nizami undertakes an ingenious journey into the subconscious, with Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa as her guide. Behind every mask is a new mask, says Pessoa in his Sonnet VIII. Who am I really, if my identity is a matryoshka doll?


Performer Kristia Michael plays two roles: she is both scientist (or narrator) and research object (the dreamer). Seated on a bed with a mosquito net that doubles as a projection screen, she descends into her deepest dreams, while simultaneously regarding herself.
 
Questions of identity are of all times but have taken on new meaning in our current world, in which the ubiquity of technology and media complicates perceptions of ourselves and reality. Constantly viewed and constantly drawing up different facades, we are a fragmentation bomb of ‘selves’ and yet we experience our identity as ‘whole’. The Last Mask stages that disparity in a setting that is both a laboratory and a dream sequence.

Supporting act

As a supporting act, ensemble-in-residence SKETCH351 will present itself for the first time. SKETCH351 is a musicians’ ensemble dedicated to contemporary music and creation. As maker-in-residence for Dag in de Branding, the group will be presenting a small sample of their Fluxus-inspired playground – a performative original work that encompasses their reflections on the absurdity of daily life.
